What is NutraFlora®?
NutraFlora prebiotic fiber is a short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS®) derived from beet or cane sugar using non-GMO ingredients and a traditional natural fermentation method. It is a soft, white powder that is completely soluble in water and about 30 percent as sweet as sugar. You can find this naturally-occurring prebiotic in a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains; however, it is only found in trace amounts. For example, to get the same benefits offered in one serving of NutraFlora-enriched yogurt, you would have to eat about 22 bananas, 15 onions, 16 tomatoes, or 383 cloves of garlic.

How does it work?
When you eat foods enhanced with NutraFlora, the scFOS passes through most of your digestive tract until it reaches the large intestine (colon), where it feeds the probiotic “good for you” bacteria naturally found there. NutraFlora increases calcium absorption by making the intestinal environment more acidic, keeping minerals in a digestible form longer. NutraFlora also increases a calcium binding protein, thus allowing more calcium to pass through the intestinal wall.

Quick tips:
  1. Consume a diet rich in calcium – The daily recommended allowance of calcium ranges from 1,000 to 1,300 mg depending on age, and if you don’t get enough calcium through your diet, you can take a calcium supplement to help increase calcium intake.

  2. Get vitamin D – Your body can not absorb the calcium you take in without vitamin D. You can get vitamin D from either from your diet or the sun.

  3. Incorporate prebiotic-enriched products into your diet – you can significantly boost the amount of calcium your body absorbs by eating foods enhanced with prebiotics.

  4. Exercise – Weight-bearing exercise can help those of all ages develop and maintain strong bones. In fact, children and adolescents who participate in regular exercise are more likely to achieve peak bone mass than those who remain sedentary.

  5. Don’t smoke and stay away from large quantities of alcohol – Smoking and consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can increase your risk for osteoporosis.

  6. Discuss your bone health with a healthcare professional – Take the initiative to talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about the health of your bones, including risk factors and preventative measures you can take throughout your lifetime.
